Tea has been consumed for hundreds of years in a variety of forms. Ever wondered why this drink has stood the test of time? Not only does tea have a variety of flavors to please any taste, but it also comes chalk full of health benefits.

The magical ingredients in tea are polyphenols. Polyphenols have been the subject of clinical research to explore the potential benefits. Studies have found that that these phytonutrients have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Heart Health

Tea has been researched with its benefits in heart health. Studies have shown that regular tea drinkers have a reduced risk of heart disease.

One clinical study looked at the relationship of black tea in positively reducing blood pressure. Participants drank three cups of black tea daily over six months. Study results showed that those who drank black tea had a significant decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, compared to the placebo group1.

Weight Maintenance

Tea can be a great low calorie, hydrating beverage. For people looking to drink something different than water, rather than grabbing a soda, tea is a great swap option.

Some clinical studies indicate that the caffeine and catechins, a type of polyphenol, in tea may help with weight loss2.  

Diabetes Risk

Drinking tea and its relationship with chronic disease has been studied. As diabetes affects many people worldwide, the topic of drinking tea with diabetes risk is important.

Researchers concluded that several compounds in tea were shown to improve insulin levels, specifically a polyphenol called epigallocatechin gallate1.

Scientists are also evaluating if spearmint and chamomile herbal teas have a role to play in reducing the risk of diabetes. However, more research is vital on the quantity of tea and type of tea, specifically since some of the results have involved tea in the form of a supplement instead of a drink.

Cancer Risk Reduction

Tea has also been found to have potential benefits in cancer risk reduction. One test-tube study examined the effects of the polyphenols in tea on cancer cells. Study results showed that green and black tea may play a role in regulating cancer cell growth and reducing new cell development3.
